22.4 WOOD CARVING. Superb 19th century Japanese wood
carving of Shoki or "Demon Fighter." He is sculpted wearing long
flowing garments and a hat with ear-like tassels (one missing) and is
standing on a base decorated in pine tree motifs. In his left hand
Shoki is holding a double gourd-shaped fruit (a symbol of longevity
and a charm used to ward off demons). In his right hand behind his
back, he holds a fan next to a long elaborate sword. On his left are
carvings of two frightened children in need of his protection.
Remnants of cloisonné wires inlaid into the surface suggest
that this piece was originally decorated with multicolor enamels. The
medium is very dense and extremely heavy, quite possibly rosewood,
now aged with exposure. Treatment of details and plasticity of forms
indicate that this carving was executed by a skilled master. Circa
1870. 16 inches high by 7 1/2 inches wide. 795

22.49 LACQUERWARE BOX. Really very nice turn-of-the-last century Chinese red
lacquer jewelry box with gilded underpainting. This all wood box with
silverplate brass fittings is decorated on the top, all four sides
and inside the lid. The top bears an ethereal scene of trees, houses,
boats and clouds with three human figures depicted. The sides have
similar scenes. The inside lid is very nicely painted with 5
personages in a courtyard with a tree and temple pagodas. Of great
interest is the fact that the folding lid clasp is decorated with a
reticulated, double-sided swastika. The early Oriental form opens
counterclockwise, whereas the Nazi form ran clockwise. As displayed
closed, the latch depicts the Nazi form! 5 1/4 inches long, 3 1/2
inches wide and 1 3/4 inches high. Outstanding original condition
showing a lovely old age patina.
149
22.41 CARVED IVORY BOX. Exquisite carved and pierced
jewelry box constructed entirely from ivory! This
magnificent example of Oriental artisanry is delicately carved on all
six sides with interlacing circular designs on the top and "star
busts" patterns on the sides overlaid by flowering branches and
perching birds! The execution is of the finest order. The pierced
elements are literally paper thin and defy imagination! The lidded
box has stout brass stop hinges which allow the lid to remain open in
a fixed position. The lid closes with a remarkably tight, precision
fit, engaging the old skeleton keyed lock which still works! The
delicate elements of this box are faced with solid ivory edging and
carved, raised feet which make the box surprisingly utilitarian. The
bottom of the box consists of a single solid panel of
ivory!. 4 1/2 inches long by 3 inches wide and 2 1/4 inches
high. Unbelievably fine, well preserved original condition with a
slight age patina and good signs of age. 495
