20.70  SCRIMSHAW LADY’s CANE.   Fine mid-1800’s whaleman-made scrimshaw cane fashioned for a wife or sweetheart.  This lovely walking stick is carved entirely of a single piece of whalebone forming an octagonal shaft gradually tapering to a rounded tip.  The knob is carved of whale tooth ivory in a matching octagonal fashion with a decorative inlay of colorful abalone shell in the top.  As is typical of mid-19th century walking sticks, this cane has a hole through the shaft just below the knob which would have accommodated thong.  31 ¾ inches long with the knob 1 3/8 inches in diameter.  A honest example of a mid-19th century scrimshaw walking stick in superb original condition.  995

20.69  FABULOUS FOLK ART CANE.  Absolutely charming, really hilarious, late 18th or very early 19th century gentleman’s walking stick with a solid walrus tusk ivory handle carved in the form of a man sitting on a commode!  The handle is connected to its one-piece Malacca shaft rove through with two holes for a thong as is typical of earlier canes.  The holes are fitted with sterling silver eyelets in the shape of diamonds.  The tip of the long stout shaft retains its original sterling silver ferrule with iron tip.  The remarkable handle is extremely well carved in a naïve fashion depicting the man in a high waist coat with 3 buttons.  Indicative of the cane’s age, the man is shown with a late 18th century hair style reminiscent of powdered wigs of the era.  This old walking stick is in a remarkable state of original preservation, beautifully preserved in all respects with a mellow age patina to all surfaces.  The cane measures slightly over 37 inches long overall, while the ivory handle itself is 3 ½ by 1 ¼ inches.  One of the best subject canes with the best subject matter we have ever offered!  1695

20.56 UNUSUAL IVORY-HANDLED WALKING STICK. Genuine very early 19th century, if not late 18th century gentleman's walking stick with a solid ivory knob. This very old cane is characterized by a knobby wooden shaft similar to bamboo with 14 distinct vertical sections, but unlike bamboo it has a rich dark variegated wooden surface. The turned solid ivory knob is striated with age, but still quite sound. It is connected to the shaft with a scribed coin silver separator. The tip of the shaft evidences the prior existence of a ferrule, with the securing pin still in place. 34 inches long by 1 1/4 inches in diameter at the knob. Generally excellent condition overall, with wonderful original surfaces on the cane shaft and patina to the ivory and silver. A bargain! 295

Overall condition is excellent with the handle showing a mellow age patina with a quite acceptable fine age crack on one side indicative of its age. This cane measures 31 and 3/4 inches high and the handle 4 and 3/4 inches long. Guaranteed period and all original. A very risqué representation for its time embodied in a remarkable scrimshaw stick!  1495
